Course Overview

Regulators judge scaffolding work training on evidence of application, not on the existence of a document. Where the wider occupational health and safety agenda depends on the vigilance of one experienced person, it is not yet a system. Mature organisations treat this strand of occupational health and safety as a standing capability rather than a project that finishes. Every module pairs a short input on scaffolding work training with structured practice on the participant's own material. This programme builds the occupational health and safety capability from first principles, without padding and without omitting what matters. Progress on this area of occupational health and safety is usually lost in the gap between approval and execution. The course leaves participants able to diagnose weaknesses in scaffolding work training before they become incidents. The level assumes working familiarity with the work site but no prior formal training in this strand of occupational health and safety. The final module sets out how progress on this area of occupational health and safety will be evidenced six months later.

Expected Learning Outcomes

01

Investigate incidents involving scaffolding work training to root cause without suppressing reporting.

02

Plan the handover of scaffolding work training so that capability is not lost when key staff move on.

03

Build the internal capability for scaffolding work training rather than depending on external support indefinitely.

04

Integrate scaffolding work training into the management of change process.

05

Build competence and authorisation requirements for anyone working on scaffolding work training.

06

Verify that contractors performing scaffolding work training meet the same standard as direct employees.

07

Diagnose whether a problem in scaffolding work training is one of design, resourcing or discipline.

Course Modules

01

Scaffolding work training: competence, authorisation and supervision

2 sessions · 8 points

Session 1Why a good control on scaffolding work training stops being used

  • Make the reporting route for hazards in scaffolding work training short and non-punitive.
  • Record the rationale for each significant choice made about scaffolding work training.
  • Apply management of change to any modification affecting scaffolding work training.
  • Record who is authorised to work on scaffolding work training and when authorisation expires.

Session 2Making near-miss reporting on scaffolding work training safe to do

  • Ask the people doing scaffolding work training what makes the procedure hard to follow.
  • Agree the indicators that will show whether scaffolding work training is improving.
  • Reduce the variation in how scaffolding work training is carried out between teams.
  • Set out the decisions in scaffolding work training that require sign-off and by whom.
02

Scaffolding work training: reporting, investigation and root cause

2 sessions · 8 points

Session 1Moving scaffolding work training from approval to execution

  • Check that lessons from scaffolding work training reached other sites doing similar work.
  • Confirm that those complying with scaffolding work training understand why it exists.
  • Establish what evidence demonstrates scaffolding work training is under control.
  • Audit application of scaffolding work training controls at the workface.

Session 2Who is competent to work on scaffolding work training, and how you know

  • Test that protective equipment specified for scaffolding work training fits and is maintained.
  • Close out corrective actions on scaffolding work training with a named owner and date.
  • Rehearse the emergency and rescue plan for scaffolding work training, do not just publish it.
  • Record what was learned when scaffolding work training did not go as planned.
03

Scaffolding work training: leading indicators, audit and assurance

2 sessions · 8 points

Session 1What has to be agreed before work on scaffolding work training starts

  • Confirm the training cycle sustaining competence in scaffolding work training is current.
  • Confirm that controls on scaffolding work training sit as high up the hierarchy as reasonably practicable.
  • Identify single points of dependency in scaffolding work training and reduce them.
  • Plan the sequence in which improvements to scaffolding work training will be introduced.

Session 2The exposure from scaffolding work training that shows up years later

  • Estimate the resource scaffolding work training requires to run as designed.
  • Agree the smallest change to scaffolding work training that would be visibly useful.
  • Check that scaffolding work training still works when volumes rise unexpectedly.
  • Rank the weaknesses in scaffolding work training by consequence rather than by ease of fixing.
04

Scaffolding work training: occupational health and long-term exposure

2 sessions · 8 points

Session 1The permit regime scaffolding work training needs, and the one it does not

  • Prepare the evidence pack a regulator would ask for on scaffolding work training.
  • Identify the hazards in scaffolding work training and rank them by consequence, not by frequency.
  • Establish the boundary of scaffolding work training and record what sits outside it.
  • Set leading indicators for scaffolding work training that predict rather than count.

Session 2The hard cases in scaffolding work training and how to reason about them

  • Decide what will be stopped to create capacity for scaffolding work training.
  • Test the procedure for scaffolding work training against a realistic scenario.
  • Verify contractor competence and method statements for scaffolding work training.
  • Verify permits covering scaffolding work training are issued by someone competent to assess the hazard.
